Henry James Nigeria, b. 1996

“My work aims to capture the quiet beauty of my people and our everyday surroundings. By blending acrylic pigments with the threads of our fabrics, I seek to inscribe our individual stories into the materiality of our collective heritage. Fabric is not merely clothing; it is our second skin, our visible history.”

Born in Nigeria, Oriolowo Henry, known as Henry James is emerging as a rising voice in the West African art scene.
His work explores the representation of Black bodies in everyday and natural settings, powerfully affirming the beauty, dignity, and presence of African subjects.
Through a subtle mastery of black acrylic and charcoal, the artist creates intense and vibrant portraits, characterized by strong contrasts.
Colors and patterns from traditional clothing play a central role, contributing fully to the visual and symbolic construction of his works.
